EDIBLE FRUIT COATING
Organic Fruit Coating Benefits:
1. Extended Shelf Life: The coating helps extend the shelf life of fruits by forming a protective barrier against moisture loss and oxidation. This can significantly reduce spoilage and maintain fruit freshness for a longer period.
2. Improved Appearance: It enhances the visual appeal of fruits by giving them a glossy shine, which can make them more attractive to consumers.
3. Reduced Microbial Growth: The ingredients in the coating may have antimicrobial properties that inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi on the fruit surface, further extending its shelf life.
4. Ease of Handling: Coated fruits are less prone to bruising and damage during handling and transportation due to the protective layer provided by the coating.
5. Preservation of Nutritional Quality: By reducing exposure to air and moisture, the coating helps preserve the nutritional quality of fruits, including vitamins and antioxidants.
6. Consumer Preference: Consumers often perceive coated fruits as fresher and of higher quality, which can lead to increased sales and reduced waste.

FIRST, 19 TONS OF NORTH SUMATRA SIPAHUTAR PINEAPPLES SAILED TO SAUDI ARABIA
Who doesn't know pineapple? This fruit is popular with many people and can be eaten directly or processed into various kinds of food. Pineapples have become a mainstay agricultural commodity for residents in Sipahutar District, and are an inherent characteristic of Sipahutar District.
Simalungun (15/7) North Sumatra Quarantine The Belawan Port Quarantine Service Unit inspects pineapples at the packing house in Raya sub-district. The 19.2 tonnes of pineapples will be exported to Saudi Arabia. Pineapples measuring 1.4 to 1.8 kg are packaged in 1,600 boxes. Each carton contains 8 – 9 pineapples.
Before packaging, the pineapple is treated and quality controlled. The sorting process is also carried out from the field. Harvested pineapples are sorted based on size, color and quality standards such as maturity level, golden yellow color, firmness, sweet aroma and fruit uniformity.
To produce good quality pineapple, strict treatment is carried out on the pineapple. Cleaning and washing, soaking with disinfectant, drying and waxing the pineapple are carried out. Then, after being packaged, the pineapple is stored in cold storage and transported in reefer containers at a temperature plus 7 degrees Celsius. This process helps free pineapple from plant pest organisms (OPT).
N. Prayatno Ginting as Head of North Sumatra Quarantine appreciates exporters who have been able to penetrate the Saudi Arabian market to introduce this superior commodity of North Tapanuli district. To ensure the acceptance and continuity of Sipahutar pineapple exports, Karantina carries out strict inspections from production to loading onto transportation equipment.
"Quarantine is tasked with monitoring pineapple exports, starting from ensuring that pineapples are free from insects such as fruit flies and mealybugs as well as rotting fungi. "The handling of pineapples in the packing house and storage until the conditions for lifting really determine whether the quality of the pineapples remains good until they reach the destination country," concluded Ginting.
INCORPORATING NEEM TREE AS A PESTICIDE ON OUR FARM
We are excited to announce that our farm is integrating neem tree (*Azadirachta indica*) products into our pest management strategy. This decision aligns with our commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly farming practices. Below, we outline the benefits of neem as a pesticide, its application methods, and how to grow neem trees on our farm.
Benefits of Neem Tree as a Pesticide:
1. Natural and Non-Toxic: Neem is a natural alternative to chemical pesticides, making it safe for the environment, beneficial insects, and humans. It helps reduce the reliance on synthetic chemicals.
2. Broad-Spectrum Activity: Neem oil and extracts are effective against a wide range of pests, including insects such as aphids, whiteflies, and beetles, as well as fungal diseases.
3. Repellent Properties: Neem acts as a natural repellent, deterring pests from feeding on crops and reducing infestations.
4. Growth Regulation: Neem compounds interfere with the growth and development of insects, disrupting their life cycle and reducing their population.
5. Soil Health Improvement: Neem’s natural properties contribute to better soil health by enhancing microbial activity and fertility.
Application Methods:
1. Neem Oil Spray:
- Preparation: Dilute neem oil with water, usually at a ratio of 1-2 tablespoons of neem oil per gallon of water. Add a small amount of mild soap to help the mixture adhere to plant surfaces.
- Application: Spray the solution evenly on the affected plants, covering both the upper and lower surfaces of leaves. Apply early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid direct sunlight which can cause the solution to burn plants.
- Frequency: Reapply every 7-14 days or after heavy rain for continued protection.
2. Neem Cake as Soil Amendment:
- Preparation: Incorporate neem cake (the residue left after extracting neem oil) into the soil before planting.
- Application: Use approximately 1-2 kg of neem cake per square meter of soil. This method helps improve soil fertility and control soil-borne pests and diseases.
3. Neem Extracts:
- Preparation: Create neem extracts by soaking neem leaves or seeds in water for 24-48 hours, then strain and use the liquid as a foliar spray.
- Application: Spray the extract onto plant leaves and soil, focusing on areas with pest activity.
How to Grow Neem Trees:
1. Climate and Soil: Neem trees thrive in tropical and subtropical climates. They prefer well-drained, sandy loam soil but can tolerate a variety of soil types. Ensure the location receives full sun.
2. Planting:
- Seeds: Plant neem seeds in a nursery bed or pot, burying them 1-2 cm deep. Keep the soil moist and warm until germination.
- Transplanting: Once seedlings are about 6-12 inches tall, they can be transplanted into the field or larger pots. Space the trees about 10-15 feet apart to allow for their mature size.
3. Care: Neem trees require minimal care once established. Regular watering during dry periods and occasional pruning to maintain shape and remove dead branches will support healthy growth.
By incorporating neem tree products into our farm’s pest management strategy, we are taking a significant step towards more sustainable agricultural practices. We are confident that this move will enhance the health of our crops and contribute positively to the environment.
Stay tuned for updates on our progress with neem and other eco-friendly initiatives as we continue to innovate and improve our farming practices.
